Naval Facilities Engineering Command Far East (NAVFACFE) onboard Fleet Activities (FLEACT) Yokosuka, celebrated Earth Day with their third annual Environmental Fair April 22.
Booths representing local wildlife and other information about the base’s natural, cultural, and historic resources from contractors representing local environmental firms and NAVFACFE’s Public Works Department (PWD) were on display for fair attendees learn about the base’s environmental stewardship efforts and programs.
In addition to the Earth Day displays, volunteer organizations and individuals were acknowledged and honored with certificates of appreciation by FLEACT’s commanding officer,Capt. David Glenister.
“The whole idea of Earth Day is to celebrate that this (the Earth) is our home,” said Glenister, during the Earth Day fair opening remarks. “We should take care of [the Earth]. We encourage all of the commands on base to pick up trash. We encourage recycling, in fact, we make millions of dollars from recycling that other commands can use for projects that they have.
PWD Environmental Director Chuck Sayon, echoed Glenister’s remarks adding that volunteer efforts also play a big role in keeping the base looking good. “It takes many people to keep our base looking clean and neat! And, a lot of time it takes volunteerism to get it done,” said PWD Environmental Director Chuck Sayon.
More than 18 organizations and individuals were recognized for volunteering their time and labor for on-base projects such as monument clean-ups, trash-pickups, small maintenance construction and environmental stewardship.
“These are small individual efforts that add up to greatly improving the quality of our base community’s life,” said PWD Cultural Resources Program Manager Ryouko Araki, who oversees the base’s adopt-a-monument program.
“These groups and individuals’ contributions cannot be thanked enough,” added Sayon.
Sayon specifically thanked a number of organizations and personnel for their contributions.
