The American country music duo Thompson Square performed a concert on board Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka March 17.
Shawna and Kiefer Thompson gained popularity in the country music genre in 2010 and have produced hits that led them to receive their first Country Music Award for “Vocal Duo of the Year”, in 2012 at the 46th Annual Country Music Association Awards.
Fans of the group arrived early to get a glimpse of the group prior to their performance.
“I’ve been listening to this group since they first started and I like them because they are married; it gives them a family aspect,” said Nicole McCreary.
The crowd cheered as the Nashville-based duo appeared onstage to kick off the concert with their hit ‘I Got You’.
“ My wife and I like country music and Thompson Square reminds us of being back home; I’m glad a group my wife and I both enjoy was able to come out here,” said Fire Controlman 1st Class Steve Martinez.
During an interview, prior to the concert, Kiefer Thompson expressed his excitement for the opportunity to perform for military members.
“This is something we have wanted to do for a long time, and Navy Entertainment gave us this opportunity,” said Thompson. “Performing for men and women in the service is very important to us. Her [Shawna’s] dad was in Vietnam and my dad served as well and she has a cousin that has been in Afghanistan. We have a lot of close ties to the military in our families.”
Navy Entertainment, the organization that brings music groups to perform for military members, worked hard to get the popular music group to FLEACT, Yokosuka.
“This was a courtship of about six months,” said Karen Fritz, head of Navy Entertainment at Commander, Navy Installations Command. “They were the number one duo three years running, and they have been nominated for a Grammy so this is a big show for us. We don’t take a lot of country groups so it is nice to work with a different genre of music.”
At the end of the show, the audience serenaded Thompson with “Happy Birthday” after Shawna announced the fact to the crowd. Thompson took a bow in thanks and posted on Instagram that it will be an event the will always remember.
Thompson Square will complete the rest of their tour with Navy Entertainment with visits to Atsugi, Okinawa, Guam and Pearl Harbor.
