Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) celebrated the laying of new turf at the baseball fields by hosting a 12-team tournament on board Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Mar.7.
“The softball fields went through the artificial turf project to ensure that we have a suitable and safe playing surface year round, rain or shine,” said MWR Athletic Director John Benningfield.
The tournament began in the rain after the ceremonial throwing of the first pitch by Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Captain David T. Glenister.
Following the first pitch, the Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi Jokers, and the Carrier Strike Group (CSG)7 Silent Service played the first game.
“The field looks fantastic, I play outfield and in bad weather conditions this new turf can withstand it,” said Damage Controlman 3rd Class Matthew Klipfel of the George Washington Warriors- C team.
The renovation of Field 3 began in October 2013 and ended in December. Renovation of the main softball field began in December 2013 and ended in February.
“From a maintenance standpoint it is much more efficient. No more mowing or dragging the infield, chalking the baselines, etc. From time to time we will run a machine that grooms and vacuums the turf, but the day to day maintenance requires much less work,” said Benningfield.
Players from other teams watched in excitement for their turn to experience what it was like to play on the new turf.
The new turf looks good, and it will be a lot easier to play on. We won’t have to worry about mud spots, especially in situations like today where it is raining,” said Damage Controlman 2nd Class Jamie Parker of the George Washington Warriors- B team.
The official kick-off of softball season began with this tournament. Softball is one of the most popular adult sports at CFAY MWR.
