PACIFIC OCEAN (Feb. 3, 2014) — The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain’s (DDG 56) Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) chapter held a Super Bowl party for its crew members, Feb. 3.
The party was held early morning on the ship’s mess decks where food and drinks were served to Sailors while they watched the game on numerous televisions.
“We really wanted to make this fun and memorable for the crew,” said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Melvin Williams, John S. McCain’s CSADD chapter president. “We didn’t have a party on the ship last year because it was undergoing maintenance. Now that we’re underway, our CSADD chapter got together to see what we could do to make it feel like an actual Super Bowl party.”
The CSADD chapter prepared a special meal for the crew consisting of pizza, wings, mozzarella sticks, nachos and jalapeño poppers to provide what Williams called, “a more at-home feeling.”
“We started the Super Bowl party immediately following breakfast,” said Williams. “We had CSADD members cooking to give our [culinary specialists] a chance to relax and enjoy themselves.”
Senior and junior personnel sat side-by-side cheering for their favorite team and sharing laughs as they enjoyed their Super Bowl feast.
“The atmosphere here is great,” said John S. McCain Command Master Chief Steve Horton. “It’s like being at a high school game or being on the sidelines. Everyone is yelling, eating, having a great time and enjoying each other just like a family.”
Thanks to CSADD, the ship was full of life during the game giving Sailors from all ranks a break from their patrol to enjoy one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
“CSADD has been holding great events that bring our Sailors together,” said Horton. “They keep everyone focused and motivated to keep doing the right things, whether they’re out on liberty or on the ship.”
John S. McCain is on patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to support security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
